What does low on virtual memory mean?

In the last couple of weeks my laptop, that is less than 3 months old. Keeps telling me it is low on virtual memory, and that it needs to repair this. What does this mean? And how does it affect my computers memory?

Thank You

Virtual Memory is a portion of your hard drive that your computer mimics as RAM. Your comptuer should be automatically calibrating this for you because it knows better than you as to what it needs. You might have turned off the auto function so lets check first:

Start Menu -%26gt; Right click my computer -%26gt; Properties -%26gt; Advanced -%26gt; Performance Settings/Virtual Memory Settings (depending on your O/S)

Now in here you should have an option checked that says something like ''Let windows choose whats best for my computer''

If this is not checked, then check it and reboot, if it is checked it means either you are low on memory or need to defrag. Lets check memory first.

Start Menu -%26gt; My Computer -%26gt; Right click on your main drive (probably C:) -%26gt; Properties

Chances are your computer is not using more than a gigabyte for virtual memory so as long as you have, lets say 1 gig + 2-3 gigs = 3-4 gigs free total then you should be in the clear.

Last lets defrag your drive, even if this is not the cause it is still a good idea to do it!

Start Menu -%26gt; Programs -%26gt; accessories -%26gt; System Tools -%26gt; Disk Defragmenter
