Depending on the age of the computer, and the processor speed, the following would benifit the most.

1: Adding more memory

2: upgrading to a larger hard drive

3: upgrading to a CD/DVD-RW drive

4: Installing a better graphics card

A good rule of thumb is to not spend money trying to upgrade any PC that is over 5 yrs old. Because you can get a much faster computer that has many of the new features you would want, for less than it would cost to upgrade the old one.

Computers about 3 yrs. old will see the best ''bang for the buck'', as they tend to still have relatively fast processors, but tend to lack large amounts of memory (which is a lot cheaper to upgrade today), and often don't have CD/DVD-RW drives which can be purchased for around $50-$60.

well it really depends how much you want to spend, how much you can do. The best upgrades would be your ram and processor because they will effect the speed the most, as for usability then a dvd burner would be good and maybe a graphics card ro sound card depending what you do with it.
Save a bit more money and buy the cheapest one from Comet or another big retailer.
