Upon startup I only have the option of entering F2 or F12 for setup; which allows me to boot from a recovery disk (recovery cd from Tosihba Manufacturer) which allows me to reformat the computer only. (When the message appears, any key I press brings me back to the F2 and F12 option.) In addition, I was not given the option to copy the missing file instead. This means I'll need to reformat the computer and whatever I have in PC would be got. Does anyone know how I can repair the computer without erasing everything?

You'll need to get hold of a copy of a Windows XP cd from a friend since if you're only got a recovery cd from Toshiba, you won't have one.
Put the Windows cd into the drive and boot from CD. When prompted, boot to the recovery console.
When that loads, type cd servicepackfiles although that may be too long and you'll have to type cd servic~1 but the directory will be service pack files.
Once in there, type copy ntoskrl.exe ..\system32\ntoskrnl.exe which will copy from your latest update file into the system32 directory where it belongs.
