I've been doing more and more computer work on the side lately and want to know if I'm charging enough.

Are you certified?

Do you guarantee your work?

Are you insured?

What kind of repairs?

Please understand that the computer worlds version of a backyard mechanic isn't worth nearly as much as a real professional so you need to figure out where you are on the scale of professionalism and reliability.

Rates depend on location. I am in Middle TN and charge $60 - $80 an hour. I should add, however, that I charge for the actual time that I spend working on a machine, not the time that I leave programs running and doing their own thing while I'm working on something else. Report It


In my area $50.00 an hour is high. One shop will back up your data to CD and reinstall Windows for for less then $100.00, they also run one of the local ISP's. Report It


depends on your overhead. Those idiots from Best Buy charge and arm and a leg. I would say $70-$100 an hour is competetive in California. Also depends on your area.
Get out your phone book and call half a dozen listed computer repair shops in your area and ask what they charge per hour, do they offer discounts, package deals or specials and what is their guarantee. Check out a few with the Better Business Bureau for complaints.

Depends upon what environment and type of work you are doing.

To give you an idea, check Geek Squad's rates online. That's for consumer support only mind you but it gives you a place to compare rates with.

For corporate clients and server installation and tuning the rates are much higher.
